It changes the supervision and prescribing arrangement more than the preceptor's qualifications. In full-practice states an experienced PMHNP can precept independently; in reduced and restricted states a collaborating or supervising psychiatrist is often part of the arrangement, and controlled-substance authority may be conditioned. Either way your preceptor must be licensed in your state and practicing in psychiatry.

Child and adolescent psychiatry is the scarcest almost everywhere, and geriatric psychiatry is often thin, because much of that care sits in a few academic or specialty hubs.
