This is the rotation that runs alongside every stage of the lifespan, and it has its own preceptor and setting considerations. What the psychotherapy requirement is
Psychiatric-mental health NP education is built on the expectation that you can deliver psychotherapy, not just medication. That is why programs require supervised psychotherapy experience and, specifically, clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. The point is breadth: you should graduate able to draw on more than one therapeutic approach rather than a single technique.
The modalities themselves vary by program and setting, and commonly include approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, motivational interviewing, psychodynamic therapy, group therapy, and family or systems approaches, among others. Which specific modalities satisfy your requirement, and how the hours are counted, is set by your program, so confirm your own school's definition of the two-modality expectation before planning.
Unlike a population block that lives in one clinic, psychotherapy experience often threads through your other rotations, since the same outpatient or community setting where you manage medications may also be where you deliver supervised therapy. That overlap is normal, but it still has to be documented and supervised by a qualified clinician.
Who can supervise your psychotherapy hours?
Psychotherapy supervision is generally provided by an ANCC board-certified PMHNP-BC or a board-certified psychiatrist who delivers therapy in their practice. Because therapy is also the shared territory of several disciplines, some programs permit certain supervised psychotherapy experiences to be overseen by other qualified licensed behavioral-health clinicians, such as licensed clinical social workers or licensed professional counselors, for select experiences, subject to each program's specific rules.
That flexibility is real but bounded, and it is entirely your program's to define, so do not assume a non-prescriber can supervise your therapy hours until your school confirms it. All hours have to be faculty-supervised within a program accredited by CCNE or ACEN (NLN CNEA also accredits some nursing programs), and the exact credentials are set by each school.
