PMHNP preceptor placement across Nevada

Nevada consistently ranks near the bottom nationally for the ratio of psychiatric providers to residents, and the shortage touches every county. That gap drives high demand for anyone training in the specialty, and it means preceptor slots, while real, are worth locking in early. It also concentrates the training options in two population centers with a wide rural remainder.

Las Vegas and the surrounding Clark County hold most of the state's people and most of its inpatient and specialty psychiatric capacity. Reno and the Washoe County area form the northern hub. Everything in between, the rural counties across the Great Basin from Elko to Pahrump to Ely and Winnemucca, has thin local coverage and leans on visiting and virtual providers.

The settings most likely to host a psychiatric mental health student in Nevada include:

• State operated adult behavioral health services in the south and north, including public psychiatric hospitals in the Las Vegas and Reno areas
• Community mental health centers and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics
• Addiction and substance use treatment, including medication assisted treatment, a heavy need given opioid and methamphetamine burdens
• Telepsychiatry groups that serve rural counties statewide
• Correctional and forensic psychiatry, Veterans Affairs behavioral health, and private psychiatric practices in the metros

Nevada licenses nurse practitioners through the Nevada State Board of Nursing and grants full practice authority. For placements, this means an experienced board certified PMHNP can serve as your preceptor on their own license and prescribe psychiatric medications, including controlled substances, without a supervising psychiatrist built into the arrangement.

That independence is meaningful in psychiatry, where controlled substances are a routine part of the work, from stimulants to medications for opioid use disorder. A DEA registration is required to prescribe them in Nevada, as everywhere. In a full practice state you may train one on one with an independent PMHNP or within a larger group, and both are common here.

The PMHNP track spans the lifespan, so you need supervised child and adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatry hours, plus supervised psychotherapy in at least two modalities. Adult hours are the most available, spread across the public system and private practices in both metros.

Child and adolescent psychiatry is genuinely scarce in Nevada, which reports some of the highest youth depression rates in the country alongside very few child psychiatric providers. The limited youth inpatient and specialty capacity sits in the Las Vegas area, so this block often requires early planning, telehealth, or travel. Telepsychiatry is central to Nevada's mental health system and to PMHNP training here, and the state's telehealth parity rules have helped make virtual care routine. For a Nevada rotation, the current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the current program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format. For students outside Las Vegas and Reno, a telehealth based rotation is often the most practical way to reach a full caseload.

The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. These figures serve different purposes and do not form a typical program range. A PMHNP preceptor here is generally a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner or a board certified psychiatrist, an MD or DO, and some programs accept other qualified behavioral health prescribers.
