How Many Clinical Hours Does a PMHNP Program Require?
PMHNP applicants often see two figures that answer different questions. The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. Neither figure establishes a named school's total or distribution. This page explains the distinction and the current program details students must confirm. We are an independent placement service and are not affiliated with any university.

How do the 750-hour recommendation and 500-hour eligibility sources differ?
The 2022 NTF Standards for Quality Nurse Practitioner Education recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. This is an education recommendation, not a verified hour total for every named PMHNP program.
ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. That eligibility language serves a different purpose from the NTF education recommendation and should not be converted into a school-specific requirement.
Named programs vary and control the exact total, course allocation, population distribution, activities, supervision, and documentation. Confirm the current handbook, degree audit, course instructions, and placement office before building a clinical plan.
What counts toward the hours, and what does not
Two rules about what counts are worth stating plainly, because they change your planning:
- Telehealth treatment is program-specific. Telepsychiatry may provide direct patient contact, but the current program decides whether it is permitted and how it is documented.
- Simulation treatment is program-specific. Do not assume that a simulation activity is accepted, excluded, or classified in a particular way. Confirm the current program rule before relying on it.
Beyond those rules, your hours have to be distributed across the PMHNP lifespan, child and adolescent, adult, and older-adult psychiatry, alongside supervised psychotherapy in at least two modalities, and often outpatient, inpatient, substance use, and medication-management settings. The total number is one question; the distribution across populations is the other, and both are set by your program.
How PMHNP total hours actually fall across programs
The NTF recommendation and the certification eligibility sources answer different questions; neither establishes the exact clinical-hour total or distribution for a named PMHNP program.
| Reference | Source-bound language | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| NTF recommendation | At least 750 direct patient care hours per NP population focus | Education recommendation, not a named-school total |
| Eligibility sources | At least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours | ANCC and AANPCB eligibility language |
| Named program requirement | Varies by program | The current program controls the exact total and distribution |
Do not read the two source figures as a typical program range. They come from different sources for different purposes. A named program's current materials control the student's exact total and distribution, so verify those materials directly.
PMHNP graduates may pursue the across-the-lifespan PMHNP-BC credential through ANCC. Certification information does not replace the current program's academic, clinical, approval, or documentation requirements.

What is the difference between the 750-hour and 500-hour numbers?
The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. The figures serve different purposes and neither establishes a named program's exact requirement.
Does simulation or telehealth count toward my hours?
The current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the active program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format.
Are you affiliated with a university?
No. We are an independent placement service and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any university or certification body. We place to whatever clinical-hour requirement your specific PMHNP program sets; final approval of any placement rests with the university.
