PMHNP clinical rotations in Delaware

The whole state runs on three counties, and psychiatry capacity is uneven across them. New Castle County in the north, anchored by Wilmington and Newark, holds most of the outpatient practices, hospital psychiatry, and the state-run Delaware Psychiatric Center. Kent County around Dover sits in the middle in every sense, and Sussex County to the south, from Georgetown and Seaford to the Lewes and Rehoboth coast, is the most underserved and carries a rural shortage-area designation.

The public system is coordinated by the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, which operates the state hospital and contracts a network of community providers, including Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics.

Short distances help. A student can realistically cover more than one county in a single term, and the Wilmington area sits within reach of the wider Philadelphia region, which widens the pool of sites and telehealth panels.

Delaware has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, so substance use treatment is a large and active part of the training picture. Expect strong exposure to medication-assisted treatment and to medication management.

• inpatient and acute psychiatry in general hospitals and at the Delaware Psychiatric Center;

PMHNP hours must span child and adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatry plus supervised psychotherapy. In a state this size, the scarce rotations feel scarcer.

Child and adolescent psychiatry concentrates in the New Castle County children's and academic settings, so southern students often travel north or use telehealth for it. Geriatric psychiatry has real volume in Sussex, where the retiree and coastal population is older, giving you a genuine geriatric base that many states cannot offer as easily.

Adult rotations, both outpatient and inpatient, are the easiest to secure and usually form the backbone of a Delaware plan, with the scarcer stages built in around them.

Telepsychiatry is what keeps Sussex County connected to prescribers, and it is common statewide. For a Delaware rotation, the current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the current program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format.

The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. These figures serve different purposes and do not form a typical program range. Delaware grants full practice authority, but a newly licensed APRN generally completes a period of collaborative practice until reaching set experience thresholds, after which they practice independently. An experienced, board-certified PMHNP past that point can precept you and hold independent prescriptive authority for controlled psychiatric medications; a DEA registration is required to prescribe them.
