Finding a PMHNP preceptor in Washington

Washington gives nurse practitioners full practice authority, which widens the pool of clinicians who can serve as your preceptor, and its psychiatric care splits sharply between the crowded Puget Sound west and the wide, rural east. This page shows where psychiatric-mental-health nurse practitioner students rotate in Washington, which settings host them, and how the state's rules and geography affect your match. We place students from any university, so the emphasis is the real landscape rather than any single program.

What full practice authority changes for your match

Washington is a full-practice state. Nurse practitioners, licensed here as advanced registered nurse practitioners, evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe, including controlled substances with a DEA registration, under the sole authority of the Washington State Board of Nursing. No collaborating physician agreement is required.

The practical result for a student is a larger, more flexible preceptor pool. An experienced board-certified PMHNP can precept you and hold independent prescriptive authority, so you are not limited to sites that employ a supervising psychiatrist. Psychiatrists precept too. What matters is that your preceptor is Washington-licensed, board certified, and practicing in psychiatry. Our preceptor requirements page spells out the standard.

The behavioral-health map, west to east

Most psychiatric capacity sits in the Puget Sound corridor. Seattle and King County hold academic psychiatry, hospital units, and a dense outpatient and telepsychiatry market; Tacoma and Pierce County, Everett and Snohomish County, and the Olympia area round out the west side. Vancouver anchors the southwest across the river from Portland, and Bellingham covers the northwest.

East of the Cascades the picture changes. Spokane is the eastern hub, with a lead community provider, a large inpatient hospital nearby, and residency-connected telepsychiatry reaching towns like Colville. The Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Wenatchee serve central Washington, while the Olympic Peninsula, the San Juan Islands, and the rural east and central counties are federally designated shortage areas that depend on outreach and video care.

Washington also has many tribal nations, and tribal and Indian Health Service behavioral health programs are part of the state's psychiatric care, particularly in rural and reservation communities.

Settings that take PMHNP students

Rotations in Washington tend to sit in these settings:

  • Certified community behavioral health clinics, which the state has expanded, plus long-standing community mental health agencies
  • The two state psychiatric hospitals, near Tacoma and near Spokane, for inpatient and forensic exposure
  • Academic and hospital psychiatry across the Puget Sound and Spokane
  • Addiction medicine and opioid treatment, including buprenorphine and methadone programs
  • Veterans Affairs mental health in the Puget Sound system
  • Tribal and Indian Health Service behavioral health
  • Crisis services, involuntary treatment evaluation, and mobile response
  • College counseling centers and campus psychiatry

Because full practice authority lets a PMHNP run a clinic independently, Washington also has psychiatric-mental-health nurse practitioners in private and group telehealth practice who take students, an option that is scarcer in restricted states.

Lifespan rotations and where child psychiatry concentrates

Your supervised hours must span child and adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatry, with supervised psychotherapy in at least two modalities. Adult psychiatry is available across the state. Child and adolescent psychiatry, the hardest rotation to secure almost everywhere, concentrates in Seattle's children's and academic programs, with smaller footprints in Spokane and Tacoma.

For students east of the mountains or on the coast, a child and adolescent rotation often runs partly by telehealth under a preceptor based in a metro. Geriatric psychiatry leans on consultation in long-term care and memory clinics. We schedule the youth block first, since it drives most timelines.

Telepsychiatry across a mountainous state

Geography makes telepsychiatry central in Washington, not optional. Passes close, ferries run on their own clock, and many eastern and coastal counties have no local psychiatrist. For a Washington rotation, the current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the current program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format.

It also lets us solve distance. A student in Yakima or Port Angeles can train with a Seattle or Spokane preceptor by video when licensure and your program's rules allow, which we verify before confirming a match.

Hours and the PMHNP-BC credential

The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. These figures serve different purposes and do not form a typical program range. Named programs vary and control the exact total and distribution, so confirm current requirements with your program.

Board certification is ANCC PMHNP-BC. Plan for lifespan coverage plus psychotherapy hours and medication management, and count your clinical hours as you go so nothing is short at the end.

Questions

Good to know

Does full practice authority make it easier to find a PMHNP preceptor in Washington?

It helps. Because nurse practitioners practice independently here, experienced PMHNPs can precept without a supervising physician, which widens the pool beyond physician-led clinics and includes independent and telehealth practices. You still need a Washington-licensed, board-certified PMHNP or a psychiatrist practicing in psychiatry, and we confirm those credentials before a match.

How does the west-side, east-side split affect my placement?

The Puget Sound corridor has the most depth in inpatient, academic, and child psychiatry, so metro students have more on-site options. Spokane anchors the east, and the rural east, central counties, and coast rely heavily on telepsychiatry. We match to your location and use video to fill rotations your area cannot staff.

Do telehealth psychiatry hours count in Washington?

Your current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the current program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format. Confirm modality and site rules with your own program, since these vary by school.

Which psychiatric rotation is hardest to get here?

Child and adolescent psychiatry. It concentrates in Seattle's academic and children's programs with a smaller presence in Spokane and Tacoma, so it books up fastest. We lock the youth rotation first and arrange geriatric and psychotherapy hours around it.
