PMHNP Preceptor and Clinical Placement FAQ
Everything PMHNP students most often ask about the clinical requirement, how many hours, which rotations, who can precept, what counts, and how our service fits, gathered in one place with honest answers. The hours and the rotations
PMHNP is an across-the-lifespan psychiatric credential, so your clinical hours have to cover the full set of populations and settings, not one clinic. The quick map of the requirement:

Who arranges the preceptor, and who can it be
Programs use different placement processes, so confirm whether your current program coordinates placements, permits or requires a student-proposed candidate, or uses another arrangement. When a proposal is authorized, a possible candidate may be a board-certified PMHNP or psychiatrist whose practice fits the course. Other clinician types belong in the plan only when the program explicitly allows them.
Every preceptor and site has to be approved, which generally means documentation such as a CV and a signed agreement, and all hours must be faculty-supervised within a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program. How many clinical hours does a PMHNP program require?
The 2022 NTF Standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per nurse practitioner population focus. ANCC and AANPCB eligibility sources separately use at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. Named programs vary and control the exact total and distribution, so confirm current requirements with your program.
What populations and rotations must PMHNP cover?
As an across-the-lifespan credential, PMHNP requires supervised experience with children and adolescents, adults, and older adults, plus supervised psychotherapy in at least two modalities. Programs also commonly place students in outpatient and community psychiatry, inpatient or acute care, substance use and addiction treatment, and medication management. The exact distribution is set by your program.
Who can serve as my PMHNP preceptor?
Generally a board-certified PMHNP (PMHNP-BC) or a board-certified psychiatrist (MD or DO). Some hours may be supervised by other qualified behavioral-health prescribers, such as a psychiatric physician assistant, and at some programs licensed clinical social workers or counselors for select psychotherapy experiences, subject to individual program rules. All hours must be faculty-supervised within a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program, and specific credentials are set by each program.
Which rotation is hardest to find?
Child and adolescent psychiatry, and inpatient or acute psychiatric care, are the scarcest placements to secure independently. Pediatric-psych and acute-inpatient preceptors are in short supply and the settings are limited, while every lifespan program needs these hours. Can any of the hours be done by telehealth?
Telepsychiatry is common, but the current program decides whether telehealth or simulation is permitted and how either is classified, supervised, documented, and applied. Confirm the active program rule and any applicable state requirements before relying on either format.
How many psychotherapy modalities do I need?
PMHNP training requires supervised psychotherapy with clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities. Which specific modalities satisfy your requirement is set by your program, so confirm your school's definition. See our psychotherapy hours page for detail.
What does your placement service cost, and when do I pay?
Independent placement generally runs roughly 1,000 to 2,500 dollars per rotation across the market, priced to your program and area, and because PMHNP spans several rotations we plan and price the full lifespan up front. There is no fee until matched: you pay only once a preceptor and clinical site are confirmed. The fee is for our sourcing and approval work, never a payment to the preceptor. See our cost page.
